A brief introduction to the Ancient Olympic Games and Modern Olympic Games:
The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC and that's over 2700 years ago. At that time, the games had only one event, a sprint 1. The race was run by men who competed in the nude 2, which means naked. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece.
The ancient Greeks dedicated 3 the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.
But now Women are allowed to compete in the modern Olympic Games. The modern revival 4 of the Olympic games is due in a large measure to the efforts of Pierre, baron 5 de Coubertin, of France. They were held, appropriately enough, in Athens in 1896. And the IOC, the International Olympic Committee was held two years before that. And Olympic events for women made their first appearance in 1912. But the first meeting and the ones that followed at Paris (1900) and at St. Louis (1904) were hampered 6 by poor organization and the absence of worldwide representation.
The first successful modern game was held at London in 1908; since then the games have been held in cities throughout the world.
A separate series of winter Olympic meets started in 1924 in France. Since 1994 the winter games have been held in even-numbered years in which the summer games are not contested. Until late in the 20th century, the modern Olympics were open only to amateurs, but the governing bodies of several sports now permit professionals to compete as well.

The history of the Olympic flame :
The tradition of the Olympic flame began during the ancient Olympic Games, over 2700 years ago in Greece. A flame was lit for each Olympics, every four years, and burned throughout the games. The flame symbolized 7 the death and rebirth of Greek heroes. There was no torch relay in the ancient Olympics. The first torch relay occured at the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany.

3. Is this the hope of the world in my hands? Isn't it the hope of the world in my hands?

4.look to you to see the future, stronger and free

5. We travel on相当于we will go on. guided by the flame是这句话的状语。

6.the fire within 就是the fire inside us,再深一点理解就是the desire in our hearts,我们心中的理想和欲望。

7. reach out原意是伸出,向前伸, 比如:Reach out your hands. 引申为追求,比如歌中唱到的reach out to the goal 追求你的目标。

英语中这种用法很多,就是the 加上一个形容词表示一类事物,比如the blind 盲人,the rich有钱人,the poor穷人,the good好的东西,the bad不好的东西。

10. in need of 这个词组表示需要,a world in need of inspiration就是a world that needs inspiration,例如:The company is in great need of money.

11.show someone the way 给某人指路,比如说,come on, I'll show you the way out. Peter is going to show me around the city.
