[02:05.86]My friend Paul will never forget his first chemistry teacher.

[02:11.74]He was a little man with thick glasses,

[02:16.49]but he had a strange way of making his classes lively and interesting.

[02:22.94]And his lessons were not easily forgotten.

[02:27.30]  Paul remembers one of his first lessons from this teacher.

[02:32.35]After the students were all in the chemistry lab,

[02:36.60]the teacher brought out three bottles.

[02:40.44]One was filled with petrol,one with castor oil 5 and one with vinegar 6.

[02:47.42]"Now watch carefully,"said the teacher.

[02:51.68]   He then filled a cup with some of the petrol,some of the castor oil

[02:57.92]and some of the vinegar.

[03:01.16]As the students watched him quietly,

[03:05.13]he mixed the three together.

[03:08.68]After that,he held up one of his fingers and showed it to the class.

[03:15.21]He then dipped 7 it into the cup.

[03:18.97]After a few seconds he took his finger out.

[03:23.94]"Now watch,"he said."Remember,you must do everything as I do."

[03:31.10]    He put a finger in his mouth,tasted it and smiled,looking rather pleased.

[03:38.64]Then he handed the cup around the class of students.

[03:43.92]Each student dipped a finger into the mixture and sucked 8 it.

[03:54.14]The mixture tasted terrible.

[03:57.98]    When the cup was at last returned to the teacher,he said sadly 9,

[04:03.93]"I'm sorry,none of you watched carefully enough.

[04:08.89]Yes ,I sucked a finger,but the finger I put into my mouth

[04:15.14]was not the one I had dipped into the cup."

[04:19.81]    It was Paul's first important lesson as a student of chemistry
