[00:03.63]The world's forests are the natural habitats
[00:05.99]for millions of species of plants,
[00:08.33]insects, birds, reptiles 1 and mammals.
[00:11.68]They also help produce clean oxygen.
[00:14.47]Because of illegal logging,
[00:16.33]forest fires and climate change,
[00:18.49]the world's forests are disappearing
[00:20.59]at the rate of 146,000 square kilometers a year
[00:25.92]That's about the same size as Nepal.
[00:28.60]At one time, half the land on the Earth's
[00:31.24]surface was covered by forest.
[00:33.11]Today, it is about a quarter.
[00:35.56]The WWF spends US$40 million a year to protect
[00:40.80]existing forests and to plant new trees
[00:43.29]in deforested areas.
[00:47.97]Oceans
[00:49.38]About two thirds of the Earth's surface
[00:51.59]is covered by the seas
[00:53.23]which are home to millions of species of plants
[00:55.66]and animals.
[00:57.10]The sea is also an important source of food
[00:59.50]for all of us.
[01:00.63]Without the seas, we could not live.
[01:02.80]But, because of pollution and over-fishing,
[01:05.39]many marine 2 species are in danger.
[01:07.81]The WWF has the largest marine conservation
[01:10.84]programme in the world,
[01:12.83]and works closely with goverments
[01:14.42]to protect sea life.
