美国俚语: 打扮得精美而令人倾倒dressed to the nines

今天要学的俚语是：dressed to the nines。 大家都知道nine是九。它是个数中最高的一位，从这个角度来理解，dressed to the nines是穿着达到了最高级的程度。这是个来自英国的习惯用语。注意里面的nine带有复数词尾-s。还得注意的是这里的dressed是过去分词，带有词尾-ed, 因为这个习惯用语是用来描绘穿着打扮处于什么状况的。
还有另外一个习惯用语和dressed to the nines意义相仿。它是：dressed to kill 1。 dressed to kill这个习惯用语也许来自打猎，猎人穿上猎装猎取野物。换句话说，猎人这样穿着的目的是征服野兽或者打猎取得成功。当然dressed to the nines和dressed to kill作为习惯用语意义引伸到其它方面了。
我们还是通过例子来领会这两个习惯用语究竟是什么意思吧。这是个丈夫在评论自己的太太Nancy在一次盛大舞会上的穿着打扮：

从这段话可见dressed to the nines和dressed to kill都表示打扮得炫目而令人倾倒。
