Malaysia’s prime minister says the asylum 1 seeker deal that his government has struck with Australia is mutually beneficial. But the agreement is being slammed from all sides of politics here. Australia will send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia in exchange for receiving and settling 4,000 refugees. The Opposition 2 thinks that this is a lousy deal, while the Greens say the idea is inhumane.
Now there’ll be some modest help for low-income earners in tomorrow night’s Federal Budget apparently 3. From July, those eligible 4 for the low-income tax offset 5 will get more of the money in their weekly pay instead of having to wait for their tax return. It’ll cost the Government $1.4billion a year.
Legendary 6 Australian boxer 7 Lionel Rose has died at the age of 62. Rose was the first Indigenous 8 boxer to win a world title in 1968. He was also named Australian of the Year. Rose won 42 of his 53 fights and recorded two hit songs in the 1970s. He had been ill after suffering a stroke in 2007.
Egypt’s justice minister has promised to come down hard on anyone involved in sectarian violence. Twelve people died and around 200 have been injured during deadly clashes between Christians 9 and Muslims in Cairo at the weekend. An emergency cabinet meeting has been called to discuss that violence.
And the United States is keeping up the pressure on Pakistan to explain just how Osama Bin 10 Laden 11 turned out to be hiding there. President Barack Obama says Pakistan must find out if any of its officials knew of Bin Laden’s whereabouts.
