The unemployment rate is tipped to rise when the figures for November are released later this morning. They rose from 5.7% to 5.8% in October. And most economists 1 expect them to worsen to 5.9% for November. This is despite the expectation that 5,000 jobs will have been created over the month.
Firefighters in New South Wales are bracing 2 for worsening weather conditions as they try to contain more than a hundred fires burning across the state. The fires of most concern are near Tweed Heads on the far north coast and Bathurst in the central west. Temperatures are expected to hit 40 degrees today in some parts.

Tomorrow he'll accept the Noble Peace Prize and use his speech to recognize that just last week he decided 4 to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. The White House says it realizes Mr. Obama isn't in the same class as previous recipients 5 of the Prize such as Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa.
And the baby boom 6 in Australia is continuing. A new report from the Australia Institute of Health and Welfare shows the number of births increased from 2006 to 2007.
