[00:53.74]Section 2 While You Read

[00:58.14]You're supposed to write quickly!

[01:01.74]Can you write in English?

[01:03.78]And can you also write e-mail English?

[01:06.95]Maybe not.

[01:08.52]E-mail English is a new kind of written English

[01:11.75]that is being used to save time.

[01:15.32]A lot of e-mail English words might look

[01:18.27]unfamiliar to us- many look like rubbish!

[01:21.80]This is because they come from a computer

[01:24.42]program called ICQ,which means 1 I seek you.

[01:29.80]ICQ is an e-mail "chatline" that people use to

[01:33.93]have online conversations with friends.

[01:37.17]One Canadian teacher says,

[01:39.38]"People can use their computers to

[01:41.32]talk to each other.

[01:43.14]But you are supposed to type quickly

[01:45.23]so the other person doesn't get bored,

[01:48.15]so using e-mail English helps you write quickly.

[01:51.45]E-mail English mostly uses two types of word.

[01:55.45]The first is "abbreviation 2".

[01:57.91]This is formed by using the first letter

[02:00.48]of each word in the phrase 3.

[02:03.27]For example, BTW means "by the way",

[02:07.93]and CSL means "can't stop laughing".

[02:11.83]The second kind of word is a "homophone"

[02:15.55]it's created by combining letters and symbols

[02:18.91]or numbers to sound like other words.

[02:22.03]An example of this would be to write "great"

[02:25.47]as "gr8", or to write "see you later" as "CUL8r"

[02:33.80]When you write e-mail English you do not use

[02:37.62]punctuation 4 marks only in the traditional way.

[02:40.62]You are also supposed to use them

[02:42.35]to show the emotion you are feeling.

[02:44.91]These are called "emotions".

[02:47.81]The advantage of using punctuation marks

[02:50.18]is that you can make faces with them.

[02:52.92]The most common one is the happy face

[02:55.57]it looks like this:and it is made with a colon 5

[02:59.01]and a right bracket 6 beside it.

[03:02.13]E-mail English is fun

[03:04.16]it's almost like writing riddles 7.

[03:06.48]You can learn it easily by yourselves,

[03:08.86]and experiment with your own ideas.

[03:11.29]It is not rude to write e-mail English,

[03:14.47]but it is important to use it

[03:16.26]only at the proper time

[03:18.25]when you are e-mailing a friend,

[03:20.17]or sending a message to a friend

[03:21.92]on a mobile 8 phone.

[03:23.45]But you shouldn't use it in class,

[03:25.90]and remember your teachers will not be pleased

[03:28.89]if you write e-mail English in a test!

[03:32.69]Section 3 After You Read

[03:36.39]3a Write the names of the three types of e-mail

[03:41.77]English at the top of each column 9.

[03:45.48]Then write an example of each from the reading.

[03:51.24]3b Scan 10 the reading to answer these questions.

[03:56.88]Section 4 Go For It!

[04:16.90]1.I had a great weekend.And you?

[04:22.45]2.Oh no!I am going to be late.

[04:27.93]Do these two with a partner:

[04:31.87]3.I have seen that movie four times.

[04:35.92]It's great.

[04:38.52]4.Excuse me.Could you please help me?

[04:47.40]Our e-mail English ideas

[04:50.88]If you have time!

[04:54.26]Write a note to some friends using e-mail
