A former member of a death squad 1 in the Philippines told lawmakers that the squad had killed about 1,000 people over 25 years on the orders of Rodrigo Duterte, then a mayor, now president. Edgar Matobato said targets were chiefly criminals, but also Mr Duterte’s political rivals; one victim was fed to a crocodile. A presidential spokesman dismissed the allegations.
