Leaders from nearly 200 nations signed an agreement to phase out hydro fluorocarbons, chemicals used in refrigeration and air conditioning. In the 1980s the Montreal Protocol 1 replaced chlorofluorocarbons, which were known to harm the ozone 2 layer, with HFCs—but they have since emerged as a contributor to climate change. Experts estimate the amendment 3 to the protocol will avoid a half-degree rise in global temperatures.
