After she retired 1 at the end of the 1997 season, Deng became an English major student of Tsinghua University and gained a bachelor's degree in 2001. In the same year, she was admitted to the University of Nottingham in Britain and accomplished 2 the study of her master's degree there. Eventually, in 2008 she received a PhD degree in Land Economy at the Jesus College in University of Cambridge.

At the end of 1996, Deng Yaping was recommended by Juan Antonio Samaranch, who then was the president of the International Olympic Committee, for the appointment of its members of the International Olympic Committee Athletes Commission. Though Mr. Samaranch helped her build a good platform in the field of international sports development, Deng gradually realized that she was confronted with a great obstacle English, The working languages of the Olympic Committee are English and French. However, at that time, Deng had just started learning English from scratch,let alone French. She felt quite anxious for her incompetence 3, and decided 4 to catch up as soon as possible.

During the learning process, she led a boring life. After four hours of classes every day, she had to spend four hours more to finish her professors assignments.
