WASHINGTON, May 8 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday discussed over the phone regional security issues and the stalled Middle East peace process.
"They agreed to continue the close coordination 1 between the United States and Israel on a range of security issues," the White House said in a brief statement.
Israel has so far made no comments on its reported air raids on targets inside of Syria on Friday and Sunday, but U.S. officials said earlier that the attacks were aimed at a cache of advanced Iranian-built missiles intended apparently 2 for Hezbollah, a Shiite militant 3 group in Lebanon.
Syria's state media, however, accused Israel of trying to help the country's armed opposition 4 in its prolonged conflict with government forces.
The Obama administration has been pushing for a resumption of peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians in recent months, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry plans to return to the region to continue what he called a "quiet diplomacy 5" on May 21-22.
