The Chinese government is accusing Japan of intentionally 1 tarnishing 2 China's image.

The accusation 3 comes following reports that a Chinese vessel 4 put a radar 5 firing lock on a Japanese naval 6 patrol in the East China Sea this week.

Chinese foreign ministry 7 spokesperson Hua Chunying:

"Now it is not a matter of China displaying its strength, but Japanese vessels 8 and planes' continuous illegal activities in China's territorial 9 waters and airspace. Recently, Japan has sensationalized the crisis issues, created tensions and tarnished 10 China's image, which goes against the efforts to improve relations between the two countries. China hopes to solve and address the problems through talks."

The foreign ministry says the authorities are currently verifying the incident.
