英闻天下——237 Experts Find Remains of King Richard III
英语课
Scientists in England say they have found the 500-year-old remains 1 of England's King Richard III under a parking lot in the city of Leicester.
University of Leicester's deputy registrar 2 Richard Taylor:
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is the university that gave the world DNA 3 fingerprinting 4. Today this is the university that confirms that Richard the III, the last Plantagenet monarch 5 of England has been found."
DNA from the skeleton matches a sample taken from a distant living relative of Richard's sister.
Richard III ruled England for only 2-years from 1483 and 1485 during the decades-long tussle 6 over the throne, known as the Wars of the Roses.
His rule was challenged, and he was defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field by the army of Henry Tudor, who took the throne as King Henry 7th.
The location of Richard III's body had been unknown for centuries.
He is principally remembered as the king who probably murdered his two young nephews in order to claim the English throne, and as the central figure of Shakespeare's "Richard III".
