英闻天下——173 UN Approves Resolution on DPRK Satellite Launch
英语课
A senior Chinese diplomat 1 says that the latest UN resolution on North Korea is "generally balanced."
North Korea launched an earth observation satellite in mid 2 December. The country has later defended its right to launch a satellite for peaceful and scientific purposes.
The new resolution demands North Korea not to conduct any further ballistic missile tests, nuclear tests or any further provocation 3.
The Council also calls for the resumption of Six-Party talks, which began in 2003 but was stalled in December 2008.
China's ambassador to the UN Li Baodong said it is important to recognize that diplomatic engagement with Pyong Yang is necessary at this point.
"Sanctions and just resolutions alone do not work. The policy of the sanction does not work. The resolution must be accompanied, supplemented by diplomatic efforts. Through team work and support from international community to encourage all parties concerned to negotiate with each other; to address their concerns in a balanced manner, keeping in mind the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region."
Chinese Foreign Ministry 4 spokesman Qin Gang said China regrets North Korea's satellite launch amid the universal concern of the international community.
But meanwhile, China maintains that the UN Security Council's reaction should be prudent 5 and moderate, be conducive 6 to peace and stability of the Peninsula, and help avoid the progressive escalation 7 of tensions.
Qin added China always holds that the disputes should be solved through dialogue and consultation 8.
