If you don't understand, don't hesitate 1 to ask. Some Chinese seem to feel that it is impolite 2 to ask questions even when they don't quite understand. However, it's much better to say that you don't understand than to pretend 3 you understand and answer very vagely. When you don't understand, or have a clock what was said, you may ask by saying any of the following.

I beg your pardon? I am not clear on what you said.

I am afraid I don't understand you. Would you mind saying it again?

I am sorry I don't follow you. Could you repeat that?

I didn't get it.

You'll improve your understanding and the speaker will be happy to make his point again.

 



1 hesitate
vi.犹豫,迟疑,踌躇,支吾
  • If you hesitate too long,you will miss the opportunity.如果你老是犹豫不决,那就会错失良机。
  • If you get in trouble,don't hesitate to ask for advice.如果碰到麻烦,要赶紧向人求教。
2 impolite
adj.无礼的,粗鲁的
  • It is impolite to get a word in.别人谈话时插嘴是不礼貌的。
  • It is very impolite of you to do so to customers.你这样做对顾客太不客气了。
3 pretend
vt.假装,假托,装扮;vi.假装,装作
  • So you don't need to pretend,do you?所以你不必装假了,对吧?
  • Many people pretend that they understand modern art.许多人装着自己懂得现代艺术。
