With the development of modern science and technology, some aspects of traditional culture are being lost, so some people think that traditional culture will be replaced by the modern science and technology, such as computers and the Internet. What is your opinion?

No matter how conservative you are, you will find your life is changing gradually with the rapid development of science and technology. While many of us are enjoying the conveniences that are brought to our daily lives, some pessimists 1 start to worry that traditional culture and will be replaced totally by these developments. I do believe that modern science and technology are improvements and the off-spring of traditional culture and technology. However, the old merits should never diminish.
Innovations such as computers and the Internet help us to find more practical ways to preserve our traditional culture and technology. Take e-cards as an example: By sending e-card during festivals, people could save a great amount of money instead of buying the paper-based cards and stamps. We no longer have to plan weeks ahead and worry whether these cards would arrive on time, e-cards could pass our wishes in seconds, and moreover, this simple way could also prevent millions of trees from being cut down for making paper cards. E-cards functions the same as traditional paper cards by sending our goodwill 2 and wishes. Modern technology, at this point, assists our traditions in finding a better way of existing in modern life.
On the other hand, with the increasingly wide use of modern technology, people tend to rely more on modern tools. Unduly 3 relying on these tools might also cause negligence 4 of traditional culture and technology in some aspects. Some children and adolescents are most vulnerable to the influences of these high technologies. Some spend hours on line making friends with strangers or playing games. However, the ability of chatting on line can never replace the interpersonal skills of face-to-face communication, and playing with digital figures can never replace the social skills that are required in social life.
Admittedly, the overwhelming science and technology development is changing our lives astonishingly. But these developments should work to support the traditional culture and technology rather than replace them. Scientists and sociologists should work together to enhance the advantages of modern developments and control the abuse of modern tools. [CKQ]Modern Technology internet--- book or written words.
With the rapid development of modern technology, increasing amount of data and information is transferred and restored through internet. However, I am not a believer in the argument that internet or any other modern technology would replace the book or the written words.
Firstly, books and written words comparably require fewer resources to spread information and are more convenient to users. People have to own computers or access to internet to be able to open or read the electronic data. If all the books and written words were replaced by the electronic data, there would be no doubt that more people would become illiterate 5. Thus, reading and writing would become limited to those privileged ones who could afford to buy computers. Moreover, it could be very handy to bring a book while traveling or at places where electric power is inaccessible 6.
Secondly 7, it would be really difficult for people to control the access of electronic data and guarantee the validity. As we all know books have to be seriously reviewed by authorities before they would be able to be published. However, in the digital world, anyone can upload or post information on the website that could be visited freely by millions of people world wide. What will happen if the only access of information is replaced by these electronic versions? Teachers or parents would be frustrated 8, because they could not control the source of information that children read and study with.
In general, electronic data could and should never replace the original written information, although they much easier and quicker to convey. I do not think books and original written information would diminish before scientists could invent methods to control the drawbacks of electronic data.[CKQ]TourismTourism is developing rapidly during the 21st Century and becoming mainstay of many cities and towns with low development on other industries. However, pessimistic stated that the rapid development might pose great pressure on local recourses and will cause great negative impacts on local environment and culture. The implication and veracity 9 of this statement seem self-evident but the logical fallacy that might contained in the above statement require close examination.
First and most important. Any human development would cause changes to environment and culture, however, the development of tourism should not be the only target to be blamed, and it also comparably case less negative changes. Other industries such as manufacturing and modern farming would deplete 10 the local resources and cause much more environmental concerns. Development manufacturing may cause serious air pollution, water pollution and destroying of traditional manufacturing. Development of modern farming could cause soil erosion, simplify of local species and irreversible damage to local ecosystem 11. On the contrary, People wherever they live have their own desire to make more money and to improve their lives. Development of tourism could make great profits to local residences and at the same time make them aware the value of natural environment and their traditions.
Secondly, the changes of local culture could be better preserved with the sensible development of tourism. The nature of tourism is exploring exotic culture and sightseeing wonderful landscape. The curiousness of the visitors could make the local people to realize the treasure they are entitled----- traditional culture and technology. No one would destroy the chicken if it can produce golden eggs. The profits from the tourism would by no means to support the local people sustain and live in their original way.
The revenue could also help the local people to preserve the cultures, for example, the money could be used to refurnish old traditional architectures or set up museums.
In general, well organized tourism development plan can be great profitable while unplanned developments of tourism may cause bad effects locally. Over-construction of recreational facilities could cause damage to local scenery. Solid pollution could be caused by large flow of uncontrolled tourists. Local government and travel agencies that involved in the development must try to eliminate or reduce the bad impacts that can be controlled, even if there is no 100% proof that a certain impact is directly related to a tourist activity.
