Secretary都是秘书吗

说起办公室里的Secretary，可能我们第一反应出的意思都是秘书，不过下面这个句子要注意了：
"I chose the tall secretary where mother sat so often writing letters by a sunny window."
译这句话时要格外小心，否则就会把tall secretary译成了高个子秘书，岂不闹出笑话？
其实"secretary"在这里是一种书写的桌子，一般上面还附有一个小书架，所以全话的意思是：我选择了那个高大的写字桌，过去每逢阳光明媚的日子，妈妈常坐在窗前的桌旁写信。
"Secretary"的意思还是很多的，除了常见的“秘书”之外，它还是“书记”，如中共中央总书记的英文说法是"the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China."省委书记是"Secretary of a provincial 1 Party Committee. "书记处是"secretariat",它是"secretary"的变体。
秘书长的顺序正好和总书记倒过来，是"sec—retary—general", 如联合国秘书长是"the Secretary General of the United Nations."
可还有许多职务从中文字面看并没有“秘书”字样，但英语仍需用"Secretary "，如美国国务卿(the Secretary of State)、财政部长（the Secretary of Treasury）、教育部长（the Secretary of Education）、国防部长（the Secretary of Defense）等.
最后我们来说说，办公室的秘书还可以怎么说呢？有一种不太常用的叫法，叫做girl Friday，它大概是从man Friday演化而来的。英国小说家笛福写了本《鲁宾逊漂流记》（点击查看英文原著>>），男主角的仆人就叫man Friday。
