STOCKHOLM, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Netafim, the pioneer and world-leading provider of drip and micro-irrigation technology, received the 2013 Stockholm Industry Water Award.
The awarding ceremony was made during the 23rd World Water Week in Stockholm on Tuesday.
Netafim won the award for its "remarkable 1 achievements" and "helping 2 farmers across the world to 'grow more with less'", which were "directly contributing to a more water and food secure world," said the Stockholm Industry Water Award Committee in its citation 3.
Netafim had designed a specific solution for small holder 4 farmers in developing areas, the Family Drip System, a gravity-based drip irrigation system, which eliminated the need for labor-intensive bucket irrigation and saves water, according to a statement released by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) after the award ceremony.
Beyond innovating 5 technical systems, Netafim cooperated with local organizations to provide training, capacity building, and transfer knowledge to help farmers in developing countries maximize their yields with existing resources.
"This great honor recognizes not only what drip technology has achieved till now, but also, more importantly, what it can, and should, achieve in the future," Igal Aisenberg, President and CEO of Netafim, was quoted as saying in the statement.
Given the world's rapidly-growing population and subsequent increase in demand for food and water over the next few decades, drip will significantly contribute to fighting water scarcity 6 and improve food security, he added.
Netafim was founded in Israel in 1965 and today it provides equipment and services in over 110 countries, including holding seminars to educate farmers on water saving techniques and providing water saving solutions for mining and landscaping, improving their productivity while reducing the environmental impact.
The Stockholm Industry Water Award was established in 2000 to honor the business sector's contributions to sustainable water management.
The 23rd World Water Week, hosted and organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute, opened in Stockholm on Monday and will end on Friday this week.
