不能小看的nothing短语-英语课

　　今天我们要学习几个同nothing这个词有关的习惯用语。Nothing基本意思是“没有任何东西、没有什么。” Nothing这个词汇本身具有否定的意思。

　　第一个习惯用语是： nothing to sneeze at。Sneeze这个词的意思是“打喷嚏”，既可用作名词，也可用作不及物动词。动词短语sneeze at意思是“看不上、嗤之以鼻”。Nothing to sneeze at是指“虽然算不上是最好的、但也相当不错的、不能被小看的事物”。与它意思相对的还有一个短语nothing to write home about，意为“无足挂齿”。
　　例句-1：So you didn't win the million dollars! But you did win 10,000, didn't you? Let me tell you, friend, 10,000 dollars is certainly nothing to sneeze at!
　　不错，你的确没有赢到那一百万美元。但是你赢了一万美元，是不是？朋友，听我说一句，一万美元绝对不是一笔小钱！
　　例句-2：Okay, honey, you came in second in the 400 meters, not first. But you won the silver 1 medal and you're the second fastest runner in the state. I'd say that's nothing to sneeze at。
　　宝贝，就算你在400米赛跑中只得了第二，没争上第一，但是你获得了银牌，是全州跑第二快的人。要我说，这是谁也不能小看的成绩。
　　第二个习惯用语是：Here goes nothing。这个习惯用语是人们在开始做没有把握的事情前说的话。中文里很难找到完全对应的说法，有点像： “好了，不管那么多了。”
　　例句-3：Well, Jack 2, here goes nothing! Right now I wish I'd spent a lot more time preparing. It's a tough 3 audience 4 I hear -- Right now I'd rather be anywhere else, even at the dentist!
　　好吧，杰克，不管那么多了。我现在真希望我花了更多的时间来准备(演讲)。听说这次的听众不好对付。只要不让我去会场，我去哪儿都行，哪怕是牙医诊所。
　　第三个习惯用语是：Nothing doing，这其实也是一种说“不”的方式，只不过再语气上更为坚决。意思接近于“不行，我不答应，肯定不行”。
　　例句-3：I tell you， nothing doing! I just paid $900 to fix my car after that accident you got into last week. Didn't I tell you you can't drive my car again until you lean 5 to be a safe driver!
　　我告诉你，绝对不行！我刚刚才花了900美元修理你上周在车祸中撞坏的汽车。我不是跟你说了吗？在你能安全驾驶汽车之前，休想再动我的汽车！
　　除了nothing doing之外，人们有时候也用其它的说法：no way。还有：forget it。这后两种说法同nothing doing一样，都是坚决拒绝他人要求的时候说的话。但是，要注意的是，这三种说法都不太礼貌。所以，只能在某些适当的时候说，而不能随便使用。
