Japan returned to recession in the third quarter. GDP contracted at an annualised rate of 0.8%, more than economists 1 had feared,having shrunk by 0.7% in the second. The recession is the second since Shinzo Abe became prime minister in December 2012. Nominal 2 GDP, which includes inflation and is Mr Abe’s new focus, was flat in the quarter, though it rose by 3.1% year-on-year.
