牙买加缉获超过1吨大麻
KINGSTON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Jamaican police on Wednesday confirmed that more than 2,800 pounds (about 1,270 kilograms) of marijuana, along with other illegal items, believed to be used in the guns-for-drugs trade, were seized in a two-day drug bust 1 earlier this week.
The operations, led by Jamaican Transnational Crime and Narcotics 2 Division, also resulted in the arrest of 11 people: six Jamaicans, including an ex-cop, and five Costa Ricans, who were believed to have entered the island country illegally.
It is reported that when the first operation took place on Monday at a beach in Westmoreland, 34 knitted bags of marijuana weighing 1,633 pounds (about 741 kilograms) were seized in a Toyota Coaster bus.
Two knitted bags of marijuana, and 18 200-liter drums of gasoline were found on a boat, and an additional 15 knitted bags of marijuana weighing 359 pounds (about 163 kilograms) were also discovered at the location.
In the second raid conducted on Tuesday, 34 knitted bags containing 907 pounds (about 411 kilograms) of marijuana were seized, following the search of a two-bedroom apartment.
The names of the arrested are not supposed to be disclosed until they are charged, according to Jamaican law.
Possession or use of marijuana has been illegal in Jamaica since 1913, but the plant is widely grown on the island, which is considered one of the Caribbean's leading suppliers of marijuana to the United States.
The country launched its first medical marijuana company last December, which marked the first known effort to find a legitimate 3 source of revenue from Jamaica's bountiful, but still illicit 4, crop of marijuana.
