More than one-third of the coral in the northern and central parts of the Great Barrier Reef is dead or dying, scientists said. The chief culprit for the mass bleaching 1 of the past two months is high water temperatures—partly from the El Ni?o weather phenomenon, but aggravated 2 by global warming. A cyclone 3 lowered temperatures in the reef’s southern part.
