Good morning to you, I’m Creshon Saunders. This is the cnn.com news room in Atlanta. Here is a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Well, he’s not in the White House just yet, but President-elect Barack Obama says he already has a plan to save or create jobs. Now Obama wants an overhaul 1 of the nation’s aging infrastructure 2 which would put millions of people to work. Obama unveiled the five-point plan in his weekly radio address, stating we won’t just throw money at the problem. This comes just after the Labor 3 Department released a job report, showing a staggering unemployment rate of 6.7 percent nationwide.
A possible breakthrough for the nation’s Big Three Automakers is in the works. A senior congressional source tells CNN that aides are working this weekend on bailout loan legislation. This comes after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi softened 4 her opposition 5 to using 25 billion dollars from a research program. That program provides loans to develop fuel-efficient cars. The CEOs of General Motors, Chrysler and Ford 6 pleaded with the House Committee yesterday for 34 billion dollars in loans.
The Justice Department has reportedly indicted 7 5 of Black Water security guards involved in a deadly shootout in Baghdad last September. Sources say a sixth guard is cooperating with authorities in exchange for a plea deal. Seventeen Iraqi civilians 8 were killed when guards opened fire in a crowded intersection 9. Black Water has said the guards were ambushed 10 by insurgents 11.
There’s been more deadly violence in Iraq today. A suicide bomber 12 struck in KirKuk near a police academy. Authorities say at least one police officer was killed in that attack. Two civilians and seven police were wounded.
Millions of pilgrims are on the move in Mekka. The annual haji is considered a sacred duty for Moslems. Pilgrims are making their way to Medina where they’ll spend the day in prayer.
Those are the headlines this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is your source, on line, on TV, even when you are on the go.
