Hello, I am Mellisa Long here at the CNN Center at Atlanta with a look at some of the stories that are happening NOW IN THE NEWS on this Thursday, December 4th.
The Big Three CEOs are back in Washington two weeks after lawmakers lectured them and mocked the private jets they rode in on. This time, the heads of Chrysler, Ford 1 and GM appeared before the Senate Banking 2 Committee with detailled plans for a turnaround. But they've also added 9 billion dollars to their original request for 25 billion. Those will be loans, we should point out not gifts. Their calls got a major boost yesterday when the UAW pledged major concessions 3 on job security and health care.
Unemployment lines were nearly as long as analysts 4 expected them to be last week. They were expecting 537,000 but instead are 509,000 new jobless claims, that is still a 26-year high.
There are new terror threats in India. Officials say they've received warnings about a possible airborne attack. Police have now stepped up security at international airports in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. India's defense 5 minister also met with military leaders to discuss security on the coast and along the border with Pakistan.
President-elect Barack Obama is assuring Iraq there will be a responsible withdrawal 6 of U.S. forces. The Iraqi government says Obama called Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki to thank him for his work on the status of forces agreement. And that will go into effect in January when the United Nations mandate 7 on U.S troops in Iraq expires.
A two-day standoff with a former police chief in Ohio was finally over. Michael Swartout who had barricaded 8 himself inside the home has surrendered now without incident. Sharpshooters and other officers have been outside that home since Tuesday night. He is accused of firing a gun at his adult son. He stepped down as chief back in 98.
