According to the Upi.com on December 16, for the second year in a row, "whatever" was voted by Americans as the most annoying word or phrase in conversation, suggests a US-based poll 1。
39 percent of the 1020 American adults polled 2 said they found the word most irritating 3, followed by "like" (28 percent) and "you know what I mean" (15 percent)。
"Perhaps these words are introduced through popular culture, for example movies ... so they catch on," said Mary Azzoli, organizer of the survey, "It has a lot to do with how accepted and how popular they become in every day speech."
Azzoli also said words like "whatever" can be quite dismissive depending on how they are used。
"To tell you the truth" was also found by 10 percent to be the most grating phrase in conversation while "actually" was found by five percent of those polled to be most irritating。

在接受调查的1020名美国成人中，39%的人认为“无所谓”最令人讨厌，28%的人认为“喜欢”让人讨厌，15%的人则不喜欢短语“你知道我是什么意思”。

她还介绍说，在特定情景下，“无所谓”等词语带有鄙视和轻蔑的意味。
10%的受访者认为对话中出现“跟你说实话”是最令人讨厌的，还有5%的受访者认为“事实上”是他们最讨厌的词语。
