CAIRO, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian Foreign Ministry 1 rejected on Saturday a recent statement of the European Parliament criticizing Egypt's newly-approved constitution and the government 's approach with political opponents and journalists, official news agency MENA reported.
Egyptian Foreign Ministry's spokesman Badr Abdel-Atty said Saturday that "the statement is completely rejected as it tackles cases being reviewed by the Egyptian judiciary, such as referring a number of journalists to the criminal court."
"No party, whether internal or external, has the right to interfere 2 through remarks or comments in the issues and cases handled by the Egyptian judiciary, which is known for independence and integrity," the official added.
In a vote Thursday, the European Parliament made a statement on Egypt calling for "an immediate 3 end to all act of violence, harassment 4 or intimidation 5 against political opponents, journalists, trade unions and civil society representatives."
The statement called "all political actors and security forces in Egypt to show utmost restraint and commit to dialogue and nonviolence."
Since the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi by the military last July, his supporters have been holding protests against the interim 6 leadership, referring to his removal as "a coup 7" and calling for his reinstatement.
Last August, the security forces disbanded two major pro-Morsi sit-ins in Cairo and Giza, leaving about 1,000 dead and thousands arrested, including leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood 8, currently declared by the government as "a terrorist organization. "
Abdel-Atty said the statement put a terrorist, violent group on equal footing with the security forces "which are responsible for imposing 9 order and providing security within the law."
The European Parliament expressed "concerns" over some articles of Egypt's new constitution "that exempt 10 the armed forces from civilian 11 oversight 12, allow military judges to try civilians 13..."
The Egyptian diplomat 14 said the statement reflected many conceptions, reminding that the post-Morsi constitution had been approved by overwhelming majority of votes.
