 Earmark(专项拨款)的来历


读新闻读出了这个单词,随即脑子里闪出一个大问号——为什么“ear”(耳朵)+ “mark”(记号)=“专项拨款”?翻查辞源,恍然大悟,故事原来挺简单。 早在农耕时代,牲畜可是各家各户的命根。为防自家的猪、马、牛、羊被他人盗去,农户们就用刀在牲畜的耳朵上刻上醒目的记号,以此证明某猪某牛是自家的财产。久而久之,earmark就被引申为“标志性特点”和“指定(资金、时间等)作特定用途”。 看下面两个例句: Correct speech is an earmark of the educated man.(谈吐得体是受过教育的标志。) These funds are earmarked for our research.(这笔款项是专门拨给我们做研究的。)
