that protects the core of every faith and philosophy known to human kind

That protection, however, rests upon our constant vigilance

We like to think that the principle of separation of church and state is settled
我们倾向于认为 政教分离的原则已经确立
It is not
实际上没有
And it never will be
而且永远不会
It is up to us to guard it fiercely
我们需要坚决地拥护它
and to ensure that equality under the law means equality under the law for everyone
确保法律条文下规定的平等 对于每个人都是平等的
If you want the freedom to worship as you wish
如果你希望按照自己希望的那样进行宗教活动
to speak as you wish, and to marry whom you wish

you must tolerate my freedom to do so or not do so as well
你就必须宽容我像这样做的自由
What I do may offend you
我做的事可能会冒犯你
You may find my actions immoral or unjust
你可能觉得我的行为不道德或是非正义
But attempting to restrict my freedoms in ways that you would not restrict your own
但你不能用自身没有的限制方式来限制我的自由
leads only to injustice
否则这只会导致不公
We cannot deny others the rights and privileges that we demand for ourselves

And that is true in cities

and it is no less true at universities

where the forces of repression appear to be stronger now, I think
