RIO DE JANEIRO, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Federal Police said Monday they have arrested 23 people and seized nearly 4 tons of cocaine 1 as part of a long-running anti-narcotics operation.
The campaign targets Santos Port, the country's largest port facility, and involves a total of 46 arrest warrants and 80 search warrants, police said.
Investigations 2 which started last year determined 3 that two different criminal gangs were shipping 4 cocaine to Europe, Africa and the Caribbean aboard ships sailing from the port, police commissioner 5 Reinaldo Sperandio told a news conference.
Since the beginning of the month, officials have seized 3.7 tons of cocaine, 230,000 euros (316,779 U.S. dollars) in cash, 10 vehicles, a boat and 21 firearms.
The drugs were bought in Bolivia and smuggled 6 into Brazil through its border with Paraguay. From there, it was transported to Sao Pulo state, where Santos Port is located, and then shipped overseas.
