文中的flight backlog就是指“积压航班”，backlog即用来形容“积压的工作(backlog of work)、待办的事项。”商务活动中出现的“订单积压”也可以用backlog of orders来表示。在冰岛火山爆发后，受volcanic ash cloud(火山灰云)影响，欧洲各国实行了air control(航空管制)，实现某时间段内blanket closure of airspace(全面禁航)，造成了大量的stranded passengers(滞留旅客)。
