阿尔巴尼亚总统敦促希腊废除二战时期战争法
TIRANA, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The president of Albania Bujar Nishani on Monday requested the visiting Greek President Karolos Papoulias to push Greek Parliament to scrap 1 a World War II-era law that has technically 2 left both countries at war.
The law declaring a state of war between the two states was passed by Greece after Italian forces in Albania attacked Greece in October 1940. It has not been abolished by the Greek parliament, although both countries are members of NATO and Greece supports Albania's EU integration 3 process.
However, the relationship between the two countries has been fraught 4 with problems. Greek authorities often deny entry to some Albanian families who reside in Greece, demanding Albania write Greek toponyms in Albanian passports in the Greek language. The measure affects a number of children of Albanian emigrants 5 who were born in Greece but have Albanian citizenship 6.
Nishani said a solution must be found to to the issue of toponyms, as well as the delimitation of the sea boundaries between the two countries.
During a joint 7 news conference, the Albanian president said that the framework of bilateral 8 relations carries inherited problems from the past, but even new ones must be given serious treatment so that a solution is found.
"I voiced my concern at failure in solution of the issue of toponyms and emphasized that it is becoming an obstacle to the free movement and services related with legalization of documents," President Nishani stated.
Nishani thanked Greek support for the Euro-Atlantic integration of Albania, its NATO membership as well as with its expectations in obtaining the status of EU candidate country by December.
He said bilateral relations could be promoted through economic-trade cooperation and Greek investments in Albania.
