China’s research vessel 1 and icebreaker Xuelong, or Snow Dragon" has entered an area of clear water, after more than ten hours spent breaking through the Antarctic 2 ice. The vessel had been trapped in the area since Friday.
For more on how the Xuelong freed itself, we are joined on the phone by Zhang Beichen, a senior member of China's Antarctic Scientific Expedition on board the icebreaker.
Q1: Beichen, you were there during the whole process, tell us more about it.
Q2: After the Xuelong was trapped, a team was set up in Beijing to discuss the best way to break the ice. How was the cooperation between Beijing and the crew on the Xuelong?
