Washington confirms it will withdraw one of its Diplomats 2 from New Delhi at India’s request. It comes after Indian diplomat 1 Devyani Khobragade was indicted 3 in New York for Visa Fraud. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Washington hopes this case will now come to a close and India will take significant steps to improve their relationship and return it to a more constructive 4 place.
Meanwhile, the female Indian diplomat, whose arrest and strip search caused a major rift 5 in US-Indian ties, has arrived in New Delhi. According to the local TV channel NDTV, Devyani Khobragade returned on an Air India passenger plane on Friday night from New York.
The former deputy consul-general in New York, was arrested on December 12 and indicted on Thursday for visa fraud and making false statements about how much she paid her housekeeper 6. She was effectively expelled from the US as part of a deal in which she was granted diplomatic immunity 7 from her charges.
