RIO DE JANEIRO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Internet access among Brazilian households increased from 36 percent in 2011 to 40 percent in 2012, according to a study released Thursday by the Information and Communication Technology Studies Center.
The center said that for the first time ever, the number of Brazilians who have accessed the web at least once surpassed the number who never have.
The study also found that home access now prevails, with 74 percent of internet users in Brazil accessing the web from their houses.
Despite that figure, Internet cafes and computer centers are still the main sources of Internet access for poorer Brazilians.
Frequency of use is on the rise and 69 percent of Brazilians who have Internet access use the web on a daily basis.
Mobile access also jumped. In 2012, 24 percent of Brazilian cellphone owners accessed the web from their devices, up from 18 percent in 2011.
Internet usage is unevenly 1 distributed, with 54 percent of households in Brazil's urban centers having Internet access, while in rural areas that figure falls to 18 percent. The majority of people who have never accessed the web, or some 77 percent, live in rural areas.
"This is a matter that must be taken into consideration by public policies," said the center's manager Alexandre Barbosa. "The private sector 2 alone cannot meet the demands of this public."
