SAN SALVADOR, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Salvador Sanchez Ceren was sworn in Sunday as El Salvador's new president with a pledge to establish a new security system to tackle crimes in his country, where an average of 10 people are killed each day.
"Beginning from today, I will lead the National System of Citizen Security," said Sanchez Ceren, who won the March 9 presidential election to replace Mauricio Funes.
Sanchez Ceren, 69, is a former guerrilla commander of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front which is now a left-wing political party.
"After long years of fighting for justice and democracy in my country, I receive the presidential sash with humility 1 and respect, with the commitment to governing for all the Salvadorians," he said at the inauguration 2 ceremony.
"I will exercise presidency 3 with honesty, austerity, efficiency and transparency," he added. Sanchez Ceren is the first former guerrilla commander to become president in the country.
