Shaw, listed by Forbes as a billionaire, was also a generous philanthropist who was knighted by Britain's Queen Elizabeth in 1977 for his public service as a long-time backer of the Red Cross. 40 years ago he established the Shaw Foundation which is devoted 1 to social welfare causes. Shaw donated 4.7 billion Hong Kong dollars over the past 25 years to Chinese Mainland's public education.

There are roughly five thousand projects and buildings named after Shaw in campuses in almost every province and city there.
This is the Shaw building at Tsinghua University that was established in 1999. It’s now used to teach the sciences.
And the Shaw building at Peking University has became a landmark 2.
Shaw also made generous donations to victims of natural disasters, including those who suffered during Taiwan’s earthquake in 1999, the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami 3 in 2004, the Sichuan earthquake in 2008, and the Lushan earthquake last April.
In tribute to his long-term commitment to philanthropy, the Chinese Academy of Sciences named an asteroid 4 after Shaw.
