[00:00.00]14 Studying

[00:04.70]The bad old days

[00:12.88]The other day,a teacher got sacked for tearing a boy's shirt.

[00:20.14]The boy was fighting with another child

[00:25.00]when the teacher grabbed 2 him and pulled him away to try and stop the fight.

[00:31.24]In doing this,he tore the boy's shirt.

[00:36.52]The boy's parents complained to the headmaster

[00:42.08]and the teacher was sacked for physically 3 abusing the boy.

[00:47.54]Many people in Britain support the teacher,

[00:53.00]saying he was only trying to do what was right

[00:57.55]and that it was the boy who was at fault.

[01:01.99]Many of these people are also probably remembering

[01:07.74]what their own teachers were like and how much stricter they were!

[01:13.80]When I think of the teachers I had less than twenty years ago.

[01:20.95]I immediately remember ones who used to give out terrible punishments.

[01:27.01]My English teacher was known as Johnny Headbanger

[01:32.08]because if he caught two students talking in class.he used to grab 1 their heads

[01:38.74]and bang them together.

[01:42.27]Another one called Mr Golding.who taught us Maths.

[01:48.51]used to make you hold your arms out like a cross

[01:53.87]and then he put a Maths textbook in each hand.

[01:59.20]Those books used to weigh about two kilos each

[02:04.66]and after about tweney seconds you would be sweating and your muscles would be killing 4 you,

[02:09.78]but he would just smile and carry on teaching the class.

[02:14.92]Many teachers were cheeky. That kind of thing used to be quite normal.

[02:24.07]Nowadays,however,

[02:27.91]it sometimes seems like a teacher can't even touch a pupil without the headmaster threatening them with the sack.

[02:35.64]Many people now feel the law's gone too far.

[02:40.71]They say pupils have too much power

[02:45.25]and have learned how to push teachers to the limit.

[02:50.11]They blame the outlawing 5 of all physical punishment for an increase in bad behaviour in children.

[02:57.27]But do we really want to go back to the bad old days

[03:03.01]when teachers were basically free to beat you up?

[03:07.87]Unsurprisingly,those teachers didn't actually teach me very much-

[03:14.95]apart from how to hate them. However,

[03:20.59]the best teacher I ever had- my Chemistry teacher,Mr Green-

[03:27.15]never hit anyone. He controlled the class,

[03:33.32]because he obviously really liked what he was doing

[03:38.36]and could bring the subject alive.

[03:42.90]He showed us experiments and made them relevant

[03:48.18]by explaining how they related to real life.

[03:53.14]He was also very encouraging. He wouldn't just say Good.or Excellent.

[04:00.30]but he'd actually listen to our ideas

[04:05.26]and when we were wrong he would talk us through things.

[04:10.41]He's the main reason I became a pharmacist.

[04:16.08]So.OK.maybe things have gone too far if a teacher can get sacked for stopping a fight,

[04:25.51]but personally,I don't miss those days.

[04:30.47]I think the best way to avoid bad behaviour in class

[04:36.11]is simply by being a good teacher.

[04:40.06]Most students actually want to learn.

[04:44.60]And what about when students break the rules?

[04:49.46]Well,even in those days I remember the worst punishment didn't involve any violence.

[04:56.23]I was caught smoking in the toilets

[05:00.49]and as a punishment the headmaster wrote a letter to my parents.

[05:05.95]I tell you,my life was hell for weeks afterwards!

[05:12.50]3 Listening

[05:22.77]You are going to hear three conversations between students and their English teachers.

[05:29.61]Conversation 1

[05:33.37]France,Can I ask you a question?Of course.

[05:40.32]Can you give me the thing for the exam?

[05:45.29]What,the application form?

[05:49.34]Yeah,yeah.I want to do the exam.Do you think I can take it?

[05:56.49]Yeah,of course you can take it.but I doubt you'll pass.

[06:03.05]Yeah-great,because I need this to go to university in September.

[06:10.99]I really want to do it now.

[06:14.83]I know that's what you want,

[06:18.80]but what I'm saying is you're bound to fail id you take it now.

[06:24.76]Sorry?So you think I won't pass?

[06:30.50]No.probably not,but you never know.Miracles can happen.

[06:37.17]What?I don't understand.Do you think I can take it or not?

[06:44.92]Look.take it if you want-but don't blame me when you fail!

[06:51.09]Conversation 2

[06:56.76]How did the exam go?

[07:01.41]It was easy. All the questions I expected came up.

[07:06.84]Great.What about the writing? Was that OK?

[07:12.27]Yeah,I did the letter.

[07:16.04]What about the second piece?

[07:19.80]You have to do two piece of writing?

[07:24.66]Yeah!Maria-I must've told you that about fifty times.

[07:32.60]I didn't see another question.

[07:36.75]So you only did one?

[07:40.59]Yeah.Oh,no.Do you think I can still pass?

[07:47.07]Well,it's not impossible, but it depends how well you did on the other questions.

[07:54.93]Conversation 3

[08:00.57]What's up?You look a bit down.

[08:04.73]I got my results this for my end-of-year exams.

[08:10.08]Oh,dear.Not good news.then.No.No.I failed.

[08:17.03]Oh,no.I'm sorry. What happened?I thought you revised really hard for them.

[08:24.69]I did.but the questions weren't what I expected and I tried to answer them.but...

[08:33.54]Can you re-take it?Yeah.but I'll have to take the course again next year.

[08:40.70]What?Wait,You have to repeat the whole year?Yeah. It's normal.no?

[08:49.35]Not back home it's not. When we fail an exam at university.

[08:55.59]we usually get the chance to re-take it.

[08:59.72]but you don't have to do the whole course again.

[09:04.47]Oh,right.Well,here you have to repeat the whole course. And pay for it.of course.
