WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. employers added fewer new jobs than expected in January, putting wrinkles on the economic outlook, although the jobless rate fell to a five-year low, the Department of Labor 1 reported Friday.
The unemployment rate fell to 6.6 percent from 6.7 percent in the previous month, the lowest since October 2008.
Total non-farm payroll 2 employment rose by 113,000 in January, less than the market forecast of up to 180,000.
The number of unemployed 3 Americans declined from 10.4 million to 10.2 million, according to the report.
The number of long-term unemployed, or those jobless for 27 weeks or more, was 3.6 million, down 232,000.
Over the past year, the number of unemployed has fallen by 1.1 million.
