     Introduction

     Telex is a teletypewriter exchange service. It is conducted between two parties that have access to a teletypewriter. Telex service is now still used in some foreign economic and trade departments and corporations in China as well as in other countries and areas in the world as a mode of communication though it is not as advantageous 2 as Fax (facsimile). It has the following long points:

     (1) It is much faster than a letter.

     (2) It is cheaper than an international telephone call and can provide a written record of the message and the reply.

     (3) It is a 24-hour service and the messages can be received unattended.

2. Composing Telex Messages

     Teletypewriters print in capital letters only. Telex calls are charged on a time basis. To minimize the cost of telex transmission, one should learn to make the message as brief or concise 5 as possible, using short words that require less time in transmitting.

     The following are generally accepted telex abbreviations:
