Japan’s Okinawa prefecture assembly has adopted a resolution, urging the immediate 1 shutdown of the US Futenma airbase, and the abandonment of plans to relocate it within the prefecture.
The assembly has also urged the local governor to quit for reneging on his election pledge to have the airbase moved completely outside Okinawa. The resolution is not legally binding 2.
Last December, the Okinawa government approved a plan to move the airbase to the less populated southern part of the prefecture, marking a breakthrough on an original 1996 agreement between Japan and the US to shut the airbase. The airbase is located in a densely 3 populated urban area. Local residents associate the base with crime, pollution and noise.
