 　　North Korea today conducted a 'successful' hydrogen bomb test, Pyongyang has confirmed.The detonation 1 of the thermonuclear weapon triggered a 5.1 magnitude earthquake when it exploded at 10am local time in the north east of the country, the tremors 2 of which were felt many miles away.

　　France has now condemned 4 the nuclear test and has called for a “strong reaction from the international community”, president Fran?ois Hollande’s office said in a statement. The statement said the claims of a hydrogen bomb detonation were “an unacceptable violation 5 of [UN] security council resolutions”.

　　In Washington, the White House said it could not yet confirm the test, but vowed 8 to “respond appropriately to any and all North Korean provocations”. It said the US “will not accept [North Korea] as a nuclear state”.

Foreign secretary Philip Hammond said: “If North Korean H-bomb test reports are true, it is a grave breach 13 of UN [security council] resolutions and a provocation which I condemn 3 without reservation.”
