Muslims from all over Bosnia, mostly women, have arrived near Srebrenica to mark the sixth anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Muslims by Bosnian Serbs. The 1)massacre is considered Europe's worst 2)atrocity since World War II.
Exactly six years ago, on July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces routed lightly armed Dutch peacekeepers to 3)capture the United Nations-designated safe area of Srebrenica, a town near Bosnia's eastern border. The Bosnian Serb troops quickly rounded up thousands of Muslim 4)civilians. Men and boys were separated from their families. According to international war crimes investigators 2, between seven and eight thousand of them were systematically 3 5)executed.
The bodies of the victims were tossed into mass graves where many still remain. Since the end of the Bosnian War, the international investigators and the Muslim Commission for Missing Persons have 6)exhumed the remains 4 of nearly 5,000 victims. But they have been able to identify only about 100.
Pathologist Zlatan Sabanovic, who is working on the 7)identification project, says the program entails 5 using DNA 6 tests to establish the identity of the 8)victims. He says the process is painfully slow, partly because the Bosnian Serbs dug up the mass 9)graves and transferred the bodies elsewhere.
"They used bulldozers to dig up everything and just to hide everything,"he said. "In some body bags, we have complete bodies. In some, we have just body parts. And that's a problem. We hope that with DNA testing, we [can] put some bodies together and identify them."
Security was tight around Srebrenica and its surrounding area Wednesday as 10)relatives of the victims arrived to attend memorial ceremonies. NATO peacekeepers and Bosnian Serb police were on the 11)alert to prevent any inter-ethnic violence.
Five women who lost their husbands and sons in the massacre 12)unveiled a three-ton 13)marble marker to the victims. The monument is located in a field that survivors 7 of the massacre hope will some day be turned into a final resting place for their loved ones.
