Israeli troops have shot and killed a Palestinian woman in the West Bank and, in a separate incident inside Israel, police say they 1)foiled a potential suicide bomber 1.
The Palestinian woman (identified as Rasmia Jabarin, in her 30s) was in a taxi traveling back roads in an attempt to avoid an Israeli military 2)checkpoint on her way to her job on an Israeli farm. Troops fired at the taxi and hit the woman, who died of her wounds at a hospital.
Israel says the travel restrictions 2 are necessary to prevent terrorist attacks, but Palestinians call the permits and checkpoints needed to travel into Israel a form of 3)collective punishment that prevents law-abiding 4)residents of the Gaza Strip and West Bank from working in Israel.
In a separate incident, police say they prevented a Palestinian man from detonating a bomb he was carrying in the northern town of Afula.
Police say they 5)confronted the man, who then tried to detonate the bomb he was carrying. The suspect's 6)affiliation was not immediately known, but the Islamic militant 3 group Hamas has promised to send 10 suicide bombers 4 against Israel to avenge 5 the death of an 11-year-old Palestinian boy killed Saturday by Israeli troops.
Israeli security forces have been on a heightened state of alert recently. Authorities at the country's main international airport are urging passengers to arrive four hours before their flights as 7)occupants of vehicles entering the airport are 8)interrogated before being allowed on the grounds.
More than 600 people have been killed since the Palestinian 9)uprising, or intifada, began late last year. About three-quarters of those killed have been Palestinians.
