[00:33.33]W:We inaugurated the Fellowship

[00:38.03]of the English Association at the British Academy

[00:42.89]with a party for the Founding Fellows,

[00:47.05]which was held on Friday May 5th.

[00:51.62]It was a very successful occasion at which

[00:56.37]more than forty of the newly elected Fellows attended;

[01:01.65]we hope that there'll be many more like it.

[01:06.09]The Fellowship exists

[01:09.85]in order to recognize excellence 1 in education in English,

[01:15.78]whether that excellence be demonstrated in teaching,

[01:20.22]research,or professional activity.

[01:24.17]Candidates for Fellow-ship

[01:27.51]are considered from all areas of education in English;

[01:32.68]though the bulk of the Fellowship

[01:36.44]is likely to consist of those who work in higher education,

[01:41.80]we are pleased

[01:45.04]that the Secondary Education Committee was able

[01:49.48]to nominate a number of Fellows,

[01:53.55]and especially pleased that several of them were able to be with us in May.

[01:59.30]We are aware that as yet the Fellowship does not represent

[02:04.58]the whole range of achievement in English studies.

[02:09.33]The election of the first Fellows

[02:13.09]has about it something of a declaration of intent.

[02:18.24]Our aim was to honour current achievement,

[02:23.52]and though the Fellowship is not closed to those who have

[02:28.87]retired from teaching we did mean the emphasis to fall

[02:33.63]primarily on those who were still in office.

[02:38.07]We wanted to emphasize the role

[02:41.93]of the Fellowship as recognizing achievement nationally

[02:46.79]and therefore sought to nominate people from across the breadth of the country

[02:52.43]Anyone interested in being considered for a Fellowship

[02:57.16]should write to the Chief Executive of the Association.

[03:02.49]We also intend to act independently of such application.
