Botswana lies in the arid(不毛的,贫瘠的) basins of southern Africa, much of it within the Kalahari(喀拉哈里沙漠) Desert. But in the north, there is an immense oasis(绿洲) called the Okavango Delta 1. Created by the floodwaters of the Okavango River, this inland delta spreads over 6,500 square miles. It attracts a wealth of animal life.

Some are specialized 2 for this waterlogged environment. Hippos bask 3 in the sun. Crocodiles wait for the unwary. Lechwe graze in the shallows. These river antelopes 4 have evolved elongated(细长的) hooves(hoof的复数,蹄) that help them sprint 5 over marshy 6 ground. Other animals, more suited for the open savanna 7, must make do with getting their feet wet.

Elephants seem to enjoy themselves wallowing(打滚) in the mud, while cheetahs 8(猎豹) grudgingly(吝惜地) enter the water in search of prey 9. Africa’s wild dogs have adjusted well to the Okavango's environment. They'll hunt in wet or dry climates, day or night. They spot a group of lechwe(驴羚), but the lechwe spot them. The chase is on.

The lechwe are too quick. The dogs soon give up. The cheetahs meanwhile manage to drive their prey onto drier land. They would eat well today. For other animals, there are ample opportunities ahead to eat, to grow and to live in the vibrant 10 bounty 11 of the Okavango Delta.
