Move over extreme sports, ‘extreme phone pinching’ is guaranteed to deliver an adrenaline rush like never before. Warning: It’s not for the faint-hearted.
The nerve-wracking new challenge has people dangling 1 their expensive smartphones over all sorts of dangerous places like toilets, drains, balconies and even high cliffs. There’s only one rule – they’ve got to ‘pinch’ their gadgets 2 using only their thumb and forefinger 3!
The bizarre, rather pointless trend was apparently 4 started by Twenty One Pilots, an American indie pop band. They posted a YouTube video of them performing the phone pinch stunt 5 and it spread like wildfire across various social networks, garnering 6 over 300,000 views. Before long, the hashtag #extremephonepinching became a thing and people began tweeting videos and pictures of their own attempts.
Some of the gifs and videos show people holding their phones over gaps in drains, while others dangle 7 them over balconies several stories high. A few have held them over cliffs, rivers, famous bridges, and even Niagara Falls. One girl tried the challenge when she was in a hot air balloon. “Almost #extremephonepinching on a hot air balloon but my mom yelled at me,” she tweeted.
The trend seems pretty harmless because it seems that the forefinger and thumb do a pretty good job of holding gripping a phone. But there have been a few accidents, like with Twitter user @samtolliver1 who posted pics of his broken phone with the caption 8 “when extreme phone pinching goes wrong.” And one person was dumb enough to hold their phone over a toilet using a long pair of tongs 9. Needless to say, it fell right in!
