The black-and-white revenge tale "The Woman Who Left" by Filipino director Lav Diaz won the Golden Lion prize for best picture last Saturday at the Venice Film Festival.

The film, which lasts 228 minutes, focuses on the struggle of a schoolteacher to reintegrate into society after 30 years in prison for a murder she didn't commit.

"This is for my country, for the Filipino people and the struggle of humanity," said Diaz in his acceptance speech.

The movie is the only Asian film nominated in the Best Film category and is inspired by Leo Tolstoy's short story "God Sees the Truth but Waits".
