At least one person has been killed and 40 more are missing after a landslide 1(塌方) struck homes and destroyed mining tunnels in the southern Philippines.
Mud and rocks buried miners' houses in the remote village in Compostela Valley province on the southern island of Mindanao.
The landslide also caused the collapse 2 of access tunnels used by small-scale miners to extract gold.
Rescue teams, troops and helicopters have been sent to the village.
The landslide struck the village at about 0300 (1900 GMT Thursday).
"There are 40 still missing and that is a conservative estimate," a military spokesman, Lt-Col Camilo Ligayo, told AFP news agency.
"The landslide is massive and these people, the small-scale miners, work and live on the slopes. They have bunkers, houses, stores," he added.
At least six people have been pulled alive from the landslide. Military helicopters were on hand to ferry the injured to hospital.
But officials said rescue efforts were being hampered 3 because the landslide had blocked roads.(本文由在线英语听力室整理编辑)
