英闻天下——422 Team Clears Mines on Falkland Islands
英语课
A group of demining specialists from Zimbabwe are working to remove landmines 1 from the Falkland Islands almost 31-years after the conflict with Argentina.
20-thousand landmines were left behind after Britain and Argentina fought a war over the islands in 1982, also known as the Malvinas islands to Argentina.
Phillimon Gonamombe, is the Operations Manager for the demining team:
"I am very much proud because this is humanitarian 2. We want to help the people. People not to be injured because we know, after years, kids would like to walk everywhere. Maybe some of the people who would have got the histories of these areas, would be gone. So we want to remove the threat from the community."
While some 5-thousand landmines have been cleared since the war ended, there are still many more to de-activate.
The UK government has the legal responsibility to remove the landmines placed by Argentine forces during the 72-day war.
Thirty-six specialists make up the Zimbabwe team, all of whom are working for British company BACTEC International.
It is their third tour on the Islands clearing mines.
