　　I come here today to talk to you, the next generation of China's leaders, about the critical importance to your future of building a strong partnership 1 between China and the United States.

　　The American people deeply admire China for its thousands of years of contributions to culture and religion, to philosophy and the arts, to science and technology. We remember well our strong partnership in World War II. Now we see China at a moment in history when your glorious past is matched by your present sweeping 2 transformation 3 and the even greater promise of your future.
　　在几千年的历史长河中，中国为人类文化、宗教、哲学、艺术和科技作出了贡献，美国人民深深钦佩你们。我们铭记着第二次世界大战期间中美两国牢固伙伴关系。现在我们看到，中国处于一个通过迅猛全面的改革赶超辉煌的往昔，并展现更加美好前景的历史性时刻。
　　Just three decades ago, China was virtually shut off from the world. Now, China is a member of more than 1,000 international organizations -- enterprises that affect everything from air travel to agricultural development. You have opened your nation to trade and investment on a large scale. Today, 40,000 young Chinese study in the United States, with hundreds of thousands more learning in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
　　仅仅在30年前，中国还与世界隔绝。现在，中国加入了1000多个国际组织，这些组织影响遍及我们生活中的每一个角落，从航空到农业发展无所不包。如今，有40,000多年轻的中国学生在美国留学，还有数十万中国学生在亚洲、非洲、欧洲和拉美国家留学。
　　Your social and economic transformation has been even more remarkable 4, moving from a closed command economic system to a driving, increasingly market-based and driven economy, generating two decades of unprecedented 5 growth, giving people greater freedom to travel within and outside China, to vote in village elections, to own a home, choose a job, attend a better school.
　　贵国在社会和经济领域的变革更为显著，从一个封闭的指令性经济体制向一个日显生机、日趋注重市场性的经济转变，产生了连续20年史无前例的增长，赋予人民到国内外旅游、进行村委会选举、拥有住房、选择职业以及上更好学校的更大自由。
　　名人简介：
　　威廉·杰斐逊·克林顿，也可以成为比尔·克林顿，美国律师，政治家，美国民主党成员。1946年8月19日生于美国阿肯色州霍普镇，然后再温泉城长大。克林顿在学校时成绩出色，而且是个很好的萨克斯演奏手，他曾一度想要成为一名专业的音乐家。在高中时他作为全国学生代表到白宫与当时的美国总统约翰·肯尼迪见面。
　　这次的白宫之行让他下定决心要成为一名公务员。出身贫寒的克林顿在乔治城大学外教学院拿到国际关系学位后，又获得了罗兹奖学金，得以到英国牛津大学深造，1973年又获得了耶鲁法学院的法学学位。在耶鲁他遇到了希拉里，两人在1975年结婚。他们育有一个女儿切尔西（1980年出生）。克林顿曾任阿肯色州州长，并于1993年成功竞选美国第42任总统，1997年成功连任。在克林顿的执政下，美国经济空前繁荣昌盛，没有收到战争的困扰，也没有经济的不景气，华尔街三大股指屡创新高，克林顿总统是美国最成功的总统之一，他执政的八年被誉为“黄金八年”。
